Mobile’s job market better than given credit for, but income hasn’t caught up

Mobile’s job market appears to be stronger than it has been given credit for, though income in Mobile doesn’t appear to be matching the pace of job growth.

In the U.S. News and World Report’s annual ranking of “Best Places to Live,” Mobile was ranked 115 out of 150 cities in the United States. The rankings looked at several factors, including schools, crime and the job market.

And though Mobile’s job market continues to expand, with new additions at major employers like Austal and Airbus, U.S. News still only gave Mobile’s job market a middling score. Mobile scored a 5.5 out of ten on the “job market” index. The outlet said that Mobile had a “comparable” job market to other cities its size.

However, the data used to calculate the score seems to be taken out of context, Reid Cummings, a professor of finance at the University of South Alabama said. The ranking listed the unemployment rate for Mobile in 2021 at 8.4% and national unemployment at 8.7% for the same time period.

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the average unemployment rate in Mobile in 2021 was 4.6%; nationally, the unemployment rate was 5.4%.
